Breville Coffee & Spice Grinder Put to the Test

Freshly ground spices are heavenly for those of us who are true connoisseurs of good healthy homemade food and the best way to grind up your own homegrown spices is by using a good electric spice grinder.

Now, you could buy an expensive grinding mill but a small coffee and spice grinder will generally do a good job and usually a better job than an expensive food processor or blender can do.

After our old attachment spice grinder on our cake mixer machine died, I decided to buy this Breville Coffee & Spice Grinder and I'm very happy with it!

We tend to do a lot of grinding and to do it by hand in a mortar and pestle is just too much unnecessary physical work when the same job (if not better) can be done in 30 seconds by using an electric grinder.

Electric grinders have flat helicopter-like blades designed to pulverise spices (and coffee beans) into a powder rather than chop or blend like other food processors. Even so, you may still have to sift the powder and re-grind any larger particles for best results but that's normal for these types of machines.

I like how a small appliance like this Breville is easy to store away in the cupboard and doesn't take up much space on the kitchen bench yet it's robust enough crunch through dehydrated turmeric time and time again.

The other day I tested out our grinder by processing about 3 kgs of dried turmeric and it worked like a dream producing some of the best-powdered spice I have ever seen (or smelt).

What I also love about this particular grinder is its easy operation by simply pressing down on the top of the lid to activate the blades – no buttons or switches – and the lid can double as a container to pour the powder into if necessary.
